Full Description
August 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The section of Roman road described below was previously recorded as part of NHER 1006.
A section of Roman road is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5) as cropmarks to the west of Brampton Roman town (NHER 66780 and related). It leads from the entrance through the town’s defensive enclosure (NHER 66781), westwards through an area characterised as an industrial suburb (on the evidence of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs, geophysical surveys and excavations; see NHER 66780 and related). The road may continue as a trackway further westward beyond its mapped extent, but as no metalled surface is visible, only parallel ditches (amongst a dense area of cropmarks) this is uncertain.
See project report (S6) for more detailed discussion of the alignment of the road and its relationship to the defensive enclosure, the industrial suburb and other sections of Roman road visible in the vicinity.
