Map

March 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a probable Bronze Age ring ditch are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S5). The ring ditch most likely relates to the site of a Bronze Age round barrow. Two pit features can be seen within the centre of the ring ditch. It is possible that the pits may relate to burials. However geological cropmarks can also be seen across the area on the consulted sources and its possible that the pits may be geological rather than archaeological in origin. The ring ditch is situated within a large probable Iron Age to Roman or possibly medieval to post medieval rectilinear enclosure (NHER 67056). If the enclosure is Iron Age to Roman in date, it is possible that the ring ditch may relate to an Iron Age round house. The north western section of the ring ditch may be overlain by a linear ditch which may relate to a possible interior feature of the enclosure or possibly to a later field boundary. Further possible Bronze Age ring ditches which may relate to the sites of round barrows have been recorded approximately 150m to the southwest (NHER 67053) and 260m to the south (NHER 67054).
