Full Description
September 2021. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Fragmentary linear ditches, probably representing multi-phase boundaries, possible field boundaries, possible enclosures and trackways are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The variety of alignments suggests that more than one phase is represented. Some elements of the site could date from the Iron Age to Roman period, while others are of medieval to post medieval date. A Roman road (NHER 64232 and NHER 2796) referred to as the Fen Causeway runs through the centre of the area and cuts a probable Iron Age triple ditched boundary (NHER 64260). The site of two Bronze Age barrows (NHER 7500) is also seen in close proximity to the boundaries in the south of the area. A linear ditch feature (centred at approximately TG 1830 2272) possibly cuts the remains of one of the barrows. It is also possible that this ditch feature is natural in origin. Across the area a large number of geological cropmarks are also visible, together with post medieval field boundaries which are depicted for the most part on readily accessible historical maps (such as S3); neither has been mapped, but it is possible that amongst the geological cropmarks there are further archaeological features that have not been recognised.
