Summary

An isolated pit of possible Early Iron Age date and two undated ditches were recorded at this location during the installation of the electrical cable for an offshore windfarm. Preceding phases of archaeological evaluation had had largely negative results. Although an initial geophysical survey had identified a potentially archaeologically significant linear anomaly a subsequently excavated trial trench revealed no corresponding remains.

Map

December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 25).
This survey identified a somewhat sinuous east-to-west aligned linear anomaly that potentially represents an infilled ditch. The only other responses of note were two amorphous positive anomalies that potentially represent infilled pits, ponds or hollows.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 25; Trench 144).
The single trench excavated at this location was positioned to coincide with the east-to-west aligned linear anomaly recorded by the preceding geophysical survey.
No archaeologically-significant remains were uncovered and no finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.

2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Field 25).
An isolated pit and two intercutting ditches were recorded at this location. The pit was found to contain two flint-tempered pottery sherds of possible Early Iron Age date but the ditches were both undated.
A small assemblage of prehistoric worked flint was recovered from the subsoil layer.
See assessment report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 August July 2023.
