Summary

A watching brief maintained during the installation of the electrical connection for an offshore windfarm recorded an undated pit at this location. The charcoal-rich fill of this feature contained a number of burnt flints but no other finds. Preceding archaeological work had had largely negative results. Although an initial geophysical survey had identified a number of linear and curvilinear anomalies the majority were of uncertain origin and subsequent trial trenching revealed no corresponding sub-surface remains.

Map

December 2009. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of proposed route of onshore cable for Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm.
See report (S1) for further details.

July 2013–April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 36).
This survey identified a number of linear and curvilinear anomalies in the central and eastern parts of the site. The former include adjacent north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies at the eastern end of the field that potentially represent a double-ditched feature. The other linear and curvilinear anomalies are of a much more uncertain nature and may well represent variations in the underlying geology. One exception is a north-to-south aligned response that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). Scattered dipolar spikes probably represent ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.

November 2013-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 36; Trenches 59-62).
The trenches excavated at this location were all positioned to target linear and curvilinear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. None were found to have corresponding sub-surface remains. No finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 August July 2023.

2014-2016. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (General Watching Brief; Field 36).
A heavily truncated pit with a charcoal- and ash-rich fill was recorded at this location. A number of burnt flints were recovered from this feature but no dating evidence.
Several prehistoric worked flints were collected from the subsoil layer, none of which are closely datable.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 August July 2023.
