Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2012 and 2022 uncovered little evidence for significant remains. An initial geophysical survey recorded a number of potentially archaeological-significant anomalies but subsequent trial trenching identified no corresponding sub-surface remains. The only features exposed were two undated pits and an undated post-hole. Quarry during the 20th century was shown to have resulted in widespread disturbance.

Map

2012. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified a number of linear and discrete positive anomalies that potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains. A negative linear anomaly may also represent the ploughed-out remains of a bank or other earthwork of archaeological origins.
Extensive areas of magnetic disturbance in the western and south-central parts of the site correspond with an number of large former quarry pits visible on 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps.
Report awaited. Details from (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 6 September 2023.

June-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
A total of 30 trenches were excavated, which were positioned to avoid the main areas of known 20th-century quarrying. Extensive made-ground deposits consisting of redeposited sand and gravel mixed with subsoil were identified in trenches across the site. Most of this material had probably been deposited in the 1960, as part of the landscaping that took place following the closure of the quarries. Only intermittent undisturbed subsoil deposits were observed, mostly in the northernmost part of the site.
Two undated pits and an undated post-hole were the only features recorded.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.200).
P. Watkins (HES), 6 September 2023. Amended 27 April 2024.
