Summary

Groundworks at this site in 2021 exposed a sequence of post-medieval deposits that clearly pre-dated the construction of the adjacent 18th-century house (NHER 25851) and were therefore potentially associated with an earlier phase of occupation on the site.

September 2021. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated construction of extension to Quay House (NHER 25851).
The excavated footing trenches revealed a sequence of post-medieval deposits, the earliest of which was a thin patch of possible hearth waste that lay directly above the natural chalk. This was overlain by a layer of demolition/construction debris containing mortar and occasional flint cobbles. This was in turn sealed by a layer of silty clay containing charcoal flecks and degraded mussel shells. These deposits were truncated by the footing trenches associated with the adjacent 18th-century house.
Finds were limited to a single post-medieval pottery sherd, two pieces of cattle bone and several oyster shells.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2021.177).
