Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Bressingham. The memorial is in the form of an obelisk made of Portland stone. It was unveiled on 15 October 1922.

Location: Junction of High Road and School Road, Bressingham
Type: Obelisk
Description: The memorial is in the form of an obelisk made of Portland stone. A relief of a wreath is at the top with the dates 1914-19. The obelisk sits on a tapering plinth holding the WW1 names and original inscription in a recessed panel. At the bottom is a two-stepped base with the additional WW2 names and inscription. There is a plaque on the right side of the plinth that holds an additional inscription.
Proposed: Bressingham War Memorial Committee first met on the 5 October 1921.
Designed By: Cooley and Son of Diss.
Constructed/Sculpted By: Cooley and Son of Diss.
Cost: £81 10s.
Unveiled: It was unveiled on 15 October 1922 by Colonel Edward Mornement.
Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF BRESSINGHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ (NAMES)/GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS/ FRIENDS/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)

1940s. Relocation.
The memorial was moved from its original location outside the blacksmith’s shop to the current location. Eight posts and railings that originally surrounded the monument were not moved with the memorial. See Historic England Advice Report (S2) for further details.
