Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Hempnall. The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of stone. It was unveiled in 1919.

Location: Junction of Broaden Lane and The Street, Hempnall
Type: Wheel-head cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of stone. On the arms of the cross are decorative carvings of a rose, iris, grape, and Passion of Christ flowers: one flower on one arm. In the centre there is a Tudor rose. The wheel also has decorative floral carvings. The cross has a straight shaft with a wreath carved on the upper section on the front and back faces. The shaft sits on a plinth with a “double moulded cap and sloping foot step” (S2). The whole stands on a base. The inscription is placed on the front and back faces of the shaft. The names of the fallen are placed on the plinth faces. The WW2 addition is on the east face of the plinth. The memorial is surrounded by four posts connected by spiked chains; it is uncertain when these were added, however, it was prior to 1935.

The south-eastern post that surrounds the memorial was inscribed with COMMEMORATION/ OF THE/ KING’S/ SILVER JUBILEE/ 1935 to celebrate the King’s Jubilee.
