World War One memorial with World War Two additions
Location: Broad Street, Harleston
Type: Celtic Cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a Celtic cross made of Cornish grey granite. The cross shaft is decorated with dot motifs surrounded and interwoven with snakes and foliage. The cross head has a raised boss in the centre with less prominent bosses on each arm. The uppermost cross arm holds carvings of zoomorphic figures (possibly lambs) with the heads of four snakes beneath them. There is carved decorative knotwork on the cross ring. The cross sits on top of a plinth on top of a single-step base. The inscriptions are placed on smooth, recessed faces on the plinth, with the main inscription on the front face and WW1 names on the remaining faces. An additional granite slab is placed at the front of the plinth with the names of WW2 fallen. An additional slate plaque has been placed at the bottom of the cross shaft memorialising Norfolk’s first Victoria Cross holder.
