World War One memorial with World War Two additions
Location: Cawston Cemetery, Aylsham Road, Cawston
Type: Wheel-head cross
Description: The memorial is a medieval cross of Clipsham limestone. It is a wheel-head cross rising from a lantern on an octagonal shaft. The shaft sits on a square plinth on top a two-stepped brick and limestone base. The arms of the cross head “end in carved trefoils. The lantern is decorated with carved quatrefoils enclosing rosettes on each side with pinnacles at each corner.” (S2) The principal inscription is on the front face of the plinth with the names inscribed on the other faces of the plinth. The WW2 inscription was added to the front face of the upper stage of the base with three names beneath.
