Full Description
World War One memorial with World War Two additions
Location: Churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Black Street, Martham
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description: A wheel-head cross constructed of Portland stone commemorating the war fallen of the parish of Marsham. It was erected around 1920 when the majority of war memorials were erected. “It comprises an octagonal concrete plinth, a three-step
octagonal base and a square pedestal with inset plaques” (S2). The cross itself has a long shaft culminating in cushion capital on which sits a square pedestal inscribed with ‘IHS’. The wheel-head cross sits atop the pedestal “with octagonal arms and terminal stops” (S2). The First World War dedication is on the south-east face of the pedestal base with the names on the remaining three sides. The WW2 inscription is added to the top step of the base with names inscribed on the middle step.
