Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the war fallen of Castle Acre and Newton. The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of granite. It was erected around 1920.

Location: Churchyard of St James the Great Church, High Street, Castle Acre
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of roughly-hewn granite. A Sword of Sacrifice is carved on the front face of the cross head. It sits on a tapering shaft on top of a trapezoid-shaped plinth. The plinth rests on a two-stepped base. The granite plaque inscriptions were placed on the plinth at a later date. The plaques include the original inscription with WW1 names, along with a later addition from WW2.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
