Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Hilgay. The memorial is in the form of a Latin cross made of stone. It was constructed around 1920.

Location: Junction of Church Road and High Street, Hilgay, Downham Market
Type: Latin Cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a Latin cross made of stone. The cross has an octagonal shaft with a moulded knop at the top below the cross head. The shaft is placed on a square plinth on top of a three-step octagonal base. The inscription is placed on a modern plaque on the sides of the plinth. The WW2 inscription is placed on the base. The memorial is surrounded by gravel bordered by kerbs and fence posts.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

2021. Restoration.
The memorial was restored by Fairhaven Stone Ltd with renovations including new kerbs and fence posts connected by chain link.
