Map

September 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A possible medieval to post medieval rectilinear enclosure or building platform is seen as a very low earthwork (since levelled) on aerial photographs (S1). The feature consists of a rectilinear ditched enclosure with a break (centred at approximately 9084 0916) in the northern ditch. It is possible that this break may relate to an entrance way. The interior of the enclosed area appears to be slightly raised on S1. The function and date of the feature is unknown. However, it is possible that the feature may relate to a medieval to post medieval rectilinear enclosure, possibly a stock enclosure. Equally, it is also possible that the feature may relate to a medieval to post medieval building platform, associated with the site of a former structure. Although the feature is likely to be archaeological in origin, the feature is only seen faintly on one set of aerial photographs (S1). It is therefore possible that the rectilinear ditch could have related to a temporary modern agricultural feature. The possible enclosure is presumed to be levelled as it is not visible on later aerial photographs or the recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S2).
