Full Description
September 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks (since levelled) of a possible medieval to post medieval flood bank or causeway, are seen on aerial photographs (S1). The feature consists of sections of earthwork bank and an associated ditch. It is possible that the feature may have related to a former field boundary, flood bank or causeway. The feature is likely to be post medieval in date, although, an earlier medieval date cannot be ruled out. The feature is in close proximity to the site of two possible post medieval building platforms (NHER 67631 and NHER 67632) and the site of a probable medieval to post medieval manorial site (NHER 4190). If the feature does relate to a causeway, it is possible that the feature could have related to the nearby former building platforms (approximately 40m and 11m to the west) or to the manorial site (located approximately 175m to the south). The features are presumed to have been levelled as the earthworks are not seen on later aerial photographs (such as S2) or on the recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S3). The possible causeway or flood bank is not recorded on the readily available historic maps such as S4.
