NHER 67578 (Monument record) - Large feature potentially associated with 17th-century town defences

Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of two new residential dwellings.
Natural sand was exposed in all of the footing trenches, at a depth of between 0.15m and 0.7m below ground level. Across much of the site this sand was overlain by modern rubble, suggesting significant recent truncation. A pit of probable post-medieval date was visible, along with several modern features. In the south-west part of the site a soil deposit containing a number of post-medieval finds survived beneath the modern rubble, beneath which a deep sequence of sandy silt deposits was encountered. It is thought these deposits represented the fills of a substantial feature - potentially one associated with the 17th-century town defences (NHER 4294).
