June 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of second mooring basin at Sutton Staithe.
This work revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant remains.
The lowest deposit exposed was a light grey fine silty sand which was overlain by a light grey very fine silt. This was sealed by a mid orange-brown silty peat containing many roots, above which were very dark brown/black organic silts. A number of small tree trunks were noted at the level of these dark silts, suggesting this horizon represented a former wetland/carr. The uppermost deposit was dark orange-brown mix of peats and silt likely to have been deposited during the excavation of the adjacent mooring basin or the cleaning out of the adjacent access channel.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
