Full Description
April 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling.
The footing trenches excavated revealed two pits and a ditch. The first pit was a small feature with a charcoal-flecked fill that contained several fragments of burnt flint and a single piece of unburnt flint debitage. This was potentially prehistoric. The second pit was much larger and thought to represent a back-filled clay extraction pit of medieval or later date, although finds were limited to a single medieval pottery sherd, burnt flints and a fragment of fired clay.
The ditch was aligned roughly east-to-west and probably medieval - the excavated slot producing several pottery sherds of this date along with a single piece of butchered animal bone.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single medieval pottery sherd and two fragments of undatable copper alloy metal-detecting debris.
See report (S1) for further details.
