Full Description
December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Field boundaries, probably of post medieval date, are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S1). They are not depicted on any readily accessible historical maps (such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map, S2), but fit the same general pattern of enclosure, suggesting that although an earlier origin cannot be ruled out, they are likely to be of post-medieval date. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthworks still survive. A trial trench excavated in this area (NHER 66074) overlapped the northern edge of the western bank but did not identify it as a feature, perhaps reflecting the spreading through plough action of what was probably originally a narrower bank, which itself lay further from the trench.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 7 December 2023.
