Full Description
May 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed development in grounds of Colney Hall (NHER 9415).
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 December 2023.
October 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site (Area 1).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological significance.
The only responses of note were a number of weak fragmentary linear anomalies of undetermined origin. These may represent archaeologically-significant remains but it is equally (if not more) likely that they are of natural origin or the result of recent agricultural activity. If they are indeed ditches they must predate the 19th-century arrangement of the park as no equivalent boundaries are shown on the available 19th century maps. There is no obvious relationship between these anomalies and the possible traces of ridge and furrow visible on aerial photographs of the land immediately to the west (NHER 54436).
A concentration of multiple discrete dipolar anomalies probably represents a spread of building material and/or ferrous debris. A small number of scattered dipolar anomalies were probably also the result of ferrous objects on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
The margins of the survey area were obscured by magnetic disturbance caused by fencing and other modern structures.
Information from draft report.
