Full Description
December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Earthworks (since levelled) of a possible enclosure, trackway (or causeway) and boundary ditches of a probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). An angled ditch feature is visible in the north of the area (centred at approximately TF 8647 1420) and may relate to a section of a possible enclosure. A low boundary bank is also visible which may be associated with the enclosure. It is also possible that these features may have related to an angled field boundary rather than a section of an enclosure. Two parallel ditches can be seen in the east of the area (centred at approximately TF 8678 1418). These features likely relate to probable medieval to post medieval boundary ditches. Although, It should be noted that the suggested alignment of the Roman road recorded more broadly as NHER 3697 passes through the east of the site. It is possible that the parallel ditches could relate to a section of Roman road, although, a medieval to post medieval date for the features is more suitable. The features can be seen clearly as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features are presumed to have been levelled as they are no longer visible by the 1970s (S3) and are not visible on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S4).
