Summary

It has been suggested that this former barn was built in the late 16th century, at the same time as the original Baron's Hall (now demolished - see NHER 18325). An examination in 1982 identified no convincing dating evidence, other than the fact that its flint walls had been heightened with red brick in the 18th century. A cart door inserted at this time was subsequently lowered, probably around the time that the present Baron's Hall was constructed in the early 19th century (NHER 67878).

Map

Barn at Baron's Hall Farm. Previously recorded under NHER 18325.

August 1982. Field Observation.
Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
The barn at Baron's Hall Farm is stated by (S1) to date to 1593…[i.e. built at the same time as the now demolished Old Baron's Hall - see NHER 18325]. One end of this is ruinous, the central part rebuilt as housing with no dating evidence except a heightening of 18th-century brick above the flint walls, which continues over the remaining original east end. This is disused and retains some brick quoins and slits in brickwork that could conceivably be 16th century. A cart door inserted at the time of the heightening has been lowered again in similar brickwork to 1812 hall [NHER 67878].
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 18 August 1982. Information from record card (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 27 December 2023.
