March-April 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension to north elevation of Marsh House and new annexe with link to existing outbuilding.
Initial clearance works demonstrated that the topsoil was been heavily disturbed, suggesting the site had probably been subject to levelling and landscaping at some point in its recent history.
The footing trenches for the extension to Marsh House revealed a particularly substantial probable rubbish pit. This contained a range of post-medieval pottery, the bulk of which is of 17th- to 18th-century date, although some slightly later material is also present. Other finds recovered include post-medieval roof tiles, a possible medieval brick fragment, pieces of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe and a small amount of animal bone. It is likely that this feature predated the construction of Marsh House.
The only other features recorded were two undated, much smaller pits.
Unstratified finds were limited to a small assemblage of post-medieval brick and tile fragments.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.81).
