Summary

A possible embanked enclosure of medieval or post medieval date is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data. It could relate to settlement, or have served some other function. Alternatively, it may just be part of the drainage system within the valley bottom. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthwork still survives.

Map

January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
A possible embanked enclosure of medieval or post medieval date is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1). It could relate to settlement, or have served some other function. Broadly similar sites have been recorded as moats (such as NHER 25909 at Bittering) or tofts (such as NHER 21076 at Bylaugh). Alternatively, it may just be part of the drainage system within the valley bottom. The enclosure has been cut by a later quarry (to its south), which is itself depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S2), indicating it is relatively old. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
