Full Description
August 2014. Metal-detecting. Discovery Tours, Field 21. [1].
Medieval coin hoard of 2 coins. These silver groats are of similar date and both in very good condition, suggesting they likely went into the ground together. The lack of wear to the later coin suggests they were probably lost or deposited at some time in the first two decades of the 16th century.
Information from PAS import.
This medieval coin hoard was disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2014 T655) and returned to the finder.
Previously recorded under NHER 21874.
A. Beckham (HES), 14 October 2014. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 January 2024.
September 2017. Metal-detecting. [2].
Found in small area, close to coin hoard discovered in 2014:
3 medieval coins (2 silver groats and 1 contemporaneous Burgundian double patard). These coins are the first addendum to the hoard recovered in August 2014, which puts the total for the hoard at 5 coins.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2019 T582) but subsequently donated to a museum, along a number of additional coins found in 2019 (see below).
Previously recorded under NHER 21874.
E. McDonald (HES), 1 March 2018. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 January 2024.
March-April 2019. Metal-detecting. [3].
Found in same area as coin recovered in 2014 and 2017:
15 medieval coins (12 silver groats and 3 contemporaneous Burgundian double patards). These coins are the first addendum to the hoard recovered in August 2014, which puts the total for the hoard at 20 coins.
The majority of these coin were discovered when an archaeological team was also in attendance, with nine of the coins found in the same hole. This hole was enlarged but no further coins were found and no associated archaeological remains identified. One coin has traces of having been pressed against cloth for a long period, suggesting the coins had originally been lying together in a cloth purse or bag. Two issues of Henry VIII push the date of deposition or loss to 1514 or a little after.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2019 T582) but subsequently donated to a museum, along with those found in 2017.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 December 2024.
