Map

January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of possible medieval to post medieval field boundaries and a trackway are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The date of the features is unknown. However, a medieval to post medieval date for the features is possible. A possible trackway can be seen in the centre of the site (centred at approximately TF 8949 1371). It is also possible that the parallel ditches could relate to two field boundaries rather than a section of trackway. The southern ditch (centred at TF 8949 1371) may relate to a post medieval field boundary recorded on the Tithe map (S3). The site of medieval common edge settlement at this location has been previously recorded from earlier investigations (see NHER 20624). The cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries recorded on the readily accessible historic maps such as S4 and S5 are also visible on the aerial photographs (S2-S3). These features have not been mapped as they are recorded in good detail on the historic maps. Modern drainage ditches and features relating to modern agriculture are also seen on S2. It is possible that some of the mapped features could be modern rather than archaeological in origin.
