Map

July 2012. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The single trench opened revealed two features - a roughly east-to-west aligned ditch and a relatively small pit (with the latter observed in section only during the excavation of an exploratory sondage). A single pottery sherd of 15th- or 16th-century date was recovered from the pit, with the fairly sterile nature of its fill suggesting it had most likely been dug in order to extract the natural clay (rather than to dispose of refuse). The ditch was of an uncertain date, finds being limited to a single prehistoric worked flint and a small quantity of butchered animal bone.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
