Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2018 identified two post-medieval features - a pit and an adjacent short linear feature. The pit was of probable 17th- to 18th-century date and cut through a layer that also contained post-medieval finds, including a coin of 1660. There was no evidence for earlier activity.

Map

October 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Two short trenches were excavated, the southernmost of which exposed a sub-circular pit and a short linear feature. The former contained post-medieval pottery sherds and post-medieval brick and tile fragments, along with animal bone and an iron nail. A sample taken from the fill of this pit produced a fairly limited plant macrofossils assemblage, comprising single carbonised hulled barley and indeterminate wheat grains and a small quantity of charcoal. This pit was cut through a flinty layer that also contained a number of post-medieval finds, including a coin of 1660 and an iron knife blade. The adjacent short, north-to-south aligned linear feature also produced fragments of post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material.
Unstratified finds were limited to a several post-medieval pottery sherds, modern pantile fragments, undatable unidentified iron objects and small quantities of animal bone and oyster shell.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.96).
