Full Description
October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F82).
This survey identified a substantial causewayed ring-ditch at the eastern edge of the site that is also visible as a cropmark on aerial imagery (NHER 66766). The outer diameter of this ring-ditch is 33m and it has at least two gaps. Although interpreted as a possible Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age hengiform monument it has now been noted that it could represent the remains of a medieval to post-medieval windmill (see NHER 66766).
There was though little evidence for archaeologically-significant remains across the remainder of the site. The one other response of note is a roughly north-to-south aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with one of a pair of adjacent linear cropmarks likely to represent ditches associated with a trackway. These cropmarks are part of an extensive group of undated but possibly Late Iron Age to Roman remains recorded as NHER 67066. There was though no evidence for surviving remains associated with the other cropmarks mapped at this location, which include several probable field boundaries and part of a small probable enclosure at the southern end of the site (recorded separately as NHER 67062).
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F126; Trenches 107-109).
Three trenches were excavated at this location, all of which were placed to coincide with a pair of roughly north-to-south aligned linear cropmarks that potentially represent a former trackway (all part of the extensive group recorded as NHER 67066). Both were shown to be associated with surviving ditches, which showed evidence of having been recut on at least one occasion. The southernmost trench coincided with a north-west to south-east aligned cropmark which was also found to have a corresponding ditch. Unfortunately none of these features produced any dating evidence. Several other ditches recorded were also undated.
The ring-ditch identified by the preceding geophysical survey was not subject to further investigation as it lies outside the planned route of the scheme.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

December 2023. Metal-detecting.
Recovered from 'excavation' – presumably work associated with the installation of the onshore cable for the Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms:
1 post-medieval coin.
Information from PAS import.
