Summary

A watching brief maintained during drainage works in 2015 recorded the remains of a flint and mortar wall or foundation in the north-east corner of the churchyard of St Andrew's Church (NHER 7412). This structure was only partially exposed in the base of a deep soakaway pit. It is unclear why it lay at such a depth below present ground level, although it is possible that excess spoil from grave digging had been dumped at the margins of the churchyard. However, no disarticulated human remain was noted during either the creation of this soakaway or the excavation of a number of much shallower surface water drains adjacent to the eastern end of the church.

Map

Churchyard of St Andrew's Church (NHER 7412).

October 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of drainage works.
The excavation of a soakaway pit in the north-east corner of the churchyard revealed a small portion of a flint and mortar wall or foundation. This was exposed at the base of the deep pit, which prevented any further investigation of this structure. It is unclear why it lay at such a depth below the present ground level. It is possible that excess spoil from grave digging had been mounded at the margins of the churchyard, although no disarticulated human remains were noted during the excavation of the soakaway.
The excavation of a number of much shallower surface water drains revealed nothing of archaeological interest.
No finds were recovered during this work.
See report (S1) for further details.
