Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2022 revealed only a small number of scattered ditches, pits and possible post-holes. Most were undated, the one exception being a ditch that produced several sherds of medieval pottery. Similar pottery was also recovered from topsoil and subsoil contexts, along with a single medieval coin. All of the other unstratified finds recovered were though either undatable or of likely post-medieval to modern date.

Map

April 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development.
The six trenches excavated revealed little in the way of significant remains, with only two ditches and several scattered possible pits and post-holes recorded. The majority of these remains produced no dating evidence. The one notable exception was a north-west to south-east aligned ditch at the northern edge of the site that contained several sherds of medieval coarseware pottery, along with an iron nail. A sample taken from the fill of this feature produced little in way of plant macrofossils, with only a single carbonised wheat grain and fragments of charcoal noted.
Additional medieval pottery (similar to that from the ditch) was also recovered from topsoil and subsoil contexts, along with a single medieval coin.
The other unstratified finds recovered included post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds; fragments of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem; a piece of possible iron slag and a small assemblage of post-medieval to modern and undatable metal objects.
