Full Description
February 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
A broad, curvilinear bank, visible as a low earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1), may be part of the boundary of the medieval to post medieval Gressenhall park (NHER 50576). As the lidar was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthwork still survives. Although it lies to the east of the current recorded extent of the park, this extent is based on historical maps and is not necessarily accurate. Equally, the bank could relate to an even earlier extent of the park, pre-dating the evidence used to define its current extent. Alternatively, the bank could be a former road, but given the proximity of other, extant roads to the east and west, this seems less likely. The boundary is not depicted on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S2), which shows the road layout as it is today.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 21 February 2024.
