Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2023 recorded a number of pits and ditches, the bulk of which were either undated or probably post-medieval. One otherwise undated ditch did produce a small amount of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery, but these sherds were potentially residual as a post-medieval brick fragment was found in a nearby parallel ditch. The only other evidence for early activity on the site was three sherds of Roman pottery, all of which were recovered from what was almost certainly a post-medieval ditch.

Map

February-June 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area (Trenches 164-176 and 186-193).
The 21 trenches excavated at this location revealed various scattered ditches and a small number of discrete features. The majority of the ditches recorded were aligned east-north-east to west-south-west. Although one of these features produced three sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery, this was potentially residual as a post-medieval brick fragment was found in an adjacent parallel ditch; the remainder were undated. The one convincingly-dated ditch was a north-to-south aligned feature that contained a number of post-medieval finds, including brick fragments, a button and a buckle, along with residual Roman pottery sherds and an iron nail.
The discrete features included a large pit in the south-west part of the site that contained a post-medieval roof tile fragment and a fragment of animal bone. The small number of other pits recorded were widely dispersed and all undated.
