Full Description
May-June 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water pipeline (Middleton Quarry Mains Replacement).
The stripping of this section of the working easement uncovered an undated shallow feature with a charcoal-rich fill.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single medieval pottery sherd and a small number of medieval brick fragments.
No features were observed during the subsequent excavation of the pipe trench itself, although two huge (unworked) sandstone boulders were discovered by contractors within the natural clay approximately 100m east of the reservoir.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work is believed to have been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.438).
P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2024.
