Full Description
January 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed aggregate extraction area.
The most notable responses are a pair of curving linear anomalies at TG 2547 1872 that correspond with previously identified cropmark features tentatively identified as representing a hengiform ring ditch (NHER 24977). It is noted that these anomalies are distinct from the surrounding background texture, making an anthropogenic origin more likely.
The small number of other potentially archaeologically-significant responses include a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned linear anomaly close to the southern edge of the field that potentially represents a former field boundary ditch.
An area of magnetic disturbance at the northern end of the site corresponds with a spread of debris noted on the field surface and probably relates to activity at this location during World War Two – when aerial photographs show it to have been occupied by some form of military site (see NHER 50773).
See report (S1) for further details.
