Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020 identified little evidence for archaeologically-significant remains. The more notable responses include a small 'U'-shaped linear anomaly, although this was not necessarily archaeological in origin. Several areas of magnetic disturbance at the eastern end of the site probably represent debris or areas of ground disturbance associated with a military site present at this location during World War Two (NHER 50773). Several of these anomalies probably corresponds with emplacements visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of cropmarks recorded at this location, including a somewhat dubious hengiform feature (NHER 50782) and a group of fragmentary linear features thought to potentially represent post-medieval field boundaries (NHER 50779).

Map

January 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed aggregate extraction area.
This survey identified few potentially archaeologically-significant responses. The most notable exception is a small 'U'-shaped linear anomaly in the north-west part of the site, although it is noted that this is both fairly indistinct and similar to likely natural variation in the vicinity (making an archaeological origin much less certain).
There was no evidence for surviving remains associated with a number of cropmarks viable on aerial photographs, including a possible hengiform ring-ditch at TG 2575 1883 (recorded as NHER 50782 and already thought to be of doubtful archaeological origin) and a fragmentary group of linear features thought to potentially represent post-medieval field boundaries (NHER 50779).
Several discrete areas of magnetic disturbance towards the eastern end of the site were probably caused by debris and/or ground disturbance associated with a military site known to have been present at this location during World War Two (NHER 50773). Several of these anomalies appear to correspond with former emplacements (possibly for anti-aircraft guns or searchlights) that are visible on photographs taken in 1946.
See report (S1) for further details.
