Full Description
July-August 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of new water main (Trenches 5-10).
The six trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of significant remains, with only a small number of scattered ditches and possible pits recorded.
The ditches produced few finds. A possible north-west to south-east ditch terminus contained single sherds of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age Beaker and Roman pottery sherd, while one of two adjacent east-to-west aligned ditches produced a single medieval sherd and a fragment of lava quern, along with small pieces of post-medieval and modern glass (although these may have been intrusive). The three possible pits recorded were similarly poorly dated, producing only a single lava quern fragment.
Unstatified finds were limited to a burnt flint, three handmade pottery sherds of Late Bronze Age to Iron Age date and a single medieval sherd.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
