Full Description
August 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The three trenches excavated revealed two pits and a ditch, all of which were probably associated with medieval to post-medieval phases of activity.
The smaller of the two pits contained a single sherd of medieval pottery and two burnt flints. A single sherd of Late Saxon/early medieval pottery was recovered from a much larger pit to the south, although this feature was also found to contain two fragments of post-medieval brick. The single ditch recorded was a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature that contained a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe – suggesting that this was also probably associated with a relatively recent phase of activity.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single medieval pottery sherd.
See report (S1) for further details.
