Full Description
January 2024. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The seven trenches excavated revealed a single ditch and various pits, the majority of which produced few finds.
The only datable features were several pits that contained finds of post-medieval to modern date, including brick fragments, pottery and pieces of glass. The natural of the material within one of the larger undated pits suggested that it was also probably associated with relatively recent activity. Samples taken from this and another large feature (likely to represent a solution hollow) both produced small quantities of charcoal but little else in the way of plant macrofossils or other remains.
The other undated features included a north-to-south aligned ditch and a number of largely unremarkable possible pits.
The one earlier find recovered was a flint flake of probable Neolithic/Bronze Age.
See report (S1) for further details.
