Summary

A geophysical survey of this field in 2021 identified little of definite archaeological significance. The most notable response was an extensive east-to-west aligned linear anomaly that probably represent a former field boundary ditch of relatively recent date (although no corresponding feature can be seen on the available 19th and 20th-century sources). A number of other linear anomalies at the eastern end of the site may also represent infilled ditches.

Map

March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site (Area 3).
The most notable response was an extensive east-to-west aligned linear anomaly that was also seen in the field to the north-east (NHER 68430). The straight, regular nature of this ditch suggests it was probably associated with a field boundary of relatively recent date, although no corresponding feature are shown on the available 19th- and 20th-century sources.
A number of more fragmentary linear anomalies at the eastern end of the field may also represent infilled ditches, although their nature is much less certain.
Several larger discrete anomalies are probably infilled extraction pits.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probable caused by metal objects on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
See report (S1) for further details.

November 2021. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
A walkover survey undertaken as part of this study identified nothing of archaeological or historical interest.
See report (S2) for further details.
