Summary

Limited trial trenching at this site in 2020/2021 uncovered an undated probable quarry pit and a post-medieval field boundary ditch, both of which had been identified by a preceding geophysical survey. Two additional ditches were also recorded, neither of which produced any dating evidence.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F218).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest.
The more notable responses include a large discrete anomaly of uncertain origin at the eastern end of the site and a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Reepham tithe map (S1).
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F218; Trenches 558 and 559).
Two trenches were excavated at this location, one of which was positioned to coincide with the discrete geophysical anomaly identified at the eastern end of the site. This was found to be associated with a substantial probable quarry pit with a sterile fill that produced no dating evidence.
The second trench revealed three ditches, one of which was a north-to-south aligned feature that had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey. This corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Reepham tithe map (S1). One of the other two ditches was aligned north-north-west to east-south-east and the other east-to-west. Neither produced any dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
