Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 identified a large discrete anomaly likely to represent former quarrying. This was confirmed by subsequent trial trenching, which revealed two large pits at this location. One contained several early medieval pottery sherds.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F220).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest.
The most notable response is a large discrete area of magnetic disturbance at the western end of the site that potentially represents an area of former quarrying.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 September 2024.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F220; Trenches 349 and 350).
A trench positioned to coincide with part of the amorphous discrete anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey revealed two large probable quarry pits, one of which contained three early medieval pottery sherds.
A trench excavated to the east revealed no archaeologically-significant remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 September 2024.
