Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 identified a number of linear anomalies, the majority of which were associated with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. The more notable exceptions included an adjacent pair of anomalies at the northern end of the field. Subsequent trial trenching identified two associated ditches but these were both undated. This work also uncovered various ditches that had not been detected by the geophysical survey, along with two pits. The majority of these features were undated, the only find being a single sherd of prehistoric pottery recovered from a north-to-south aligned ditch at the southern end of the site. An undated ditch in this part of the site was associated with one of a pair of linear cropmarks now mapped at this location (part of an extensive group recorded as NHER 67066). The geophysical survey identified no evidence for surviving remains associated with a number of linear cropmarks mapped in the central part of the site, included several thought to represent a former trackway (NHER 67029). It is though clear from the trial trenching that the results of this survey aren’t particularly reliable.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Areas F85 and F86).
This survey identified various linear anomalies, although the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Colby tithe map (S1). The exceptions include an adjacent pair of north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomalies at the northern end of the field and a short north-east to south-west aligned anomaly in the southern half of the site.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a number of linear cropmarks now mapped at this location. These include north-north-west to south-south-east aligned cropmarks crossing the central part of the site that are likely to represent a former trackway (NHER 67029), a single north-to-south aligned cropmark in the same area (recorded separately as NHER 67030) and a pair of north-north-west to south-south-east aligned cropmark in the south-west corner of the field (part of an extensive group of undated but potentially Late Iron Age to Roman features recorded as NHER 67066).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F124; Trenches 103-106).
A total of four widely dispersed trenches were excavated at this location. The northernmost two trenches were positioned to coincide with the adjacent north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey – both of which were shown to have corresponding ditches. These features were though undated, as were a number of other ditches and a pit revealed by these two trenches. The one exception was a west-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Colby tithe map (S1). A trench to the south encountered another ditch associated with a boundary on this map, along with a number of other, similarly-aligned ditches and a pit. None of the features in this trench produced any dating evidence.
A trench dug in the south-west corner of the field revealed three ditches, one of which was probably associated with a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned cropmark now mapped at this location (part of an extensive group of undated but potentially Late Iron Age to Roman features recorded as NHER 67066). This produced no dating evidence. A single sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery found in an adjacent north-to-south aligned ditch was the only find recovered at this site.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
