Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F085).
This survey identified a single north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly likely to represent a former field boundary. Although this doesn’t correspond with anything shown on the available 19th-century maps its position and orientation suggest a post-medieval date is still the most likely.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F085; Trenches 325-327).
The southernmost of the three trenches excavated at this location revealed a north-west to south-east aligned ditch that clearly corresponded with the linear anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey. This contained a single sherd of early medieval pottery, although this was potentially residual.
The other trenches uncovered two additional ditches, one aligned north-north-west to south-south-east and the other north-north-east to south-south-west. Neither produced any dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 October 2024.
