Map

December 2017. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of site of proposed new residential dwelling.
The single trench excavated revealed an undated subcircular pit. The fill of this feature contained fragments of fired clay and animal bone and a sample from this deposit was found to contain charred cereal grains (with both hulled barley and oat recorded).
This trench was subsequently extended to facilitate the installation of a new water pipe but no further archaeologically-significant remains were recorded.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

December 2017-February 2018. Watching Brief.
Maintained during demolition of existing dwelling and groundworks associated with construction of new building.
The foundations for the existing prefabricated dwelling proved to be shallow, with only modern deposits disturbed during their removal. The subsequent levelling of the site also had minimal impact, with only modern made ground and topsoil removed. The various foundation trenches and service trenches excavated did though reach undisturbed natural deposits, which lay beneath a fairly deep subsoil layer. A Roman iron spearhead was recovered from this subsoil layer but no archaeologically-significant features were observed.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 November 2024.
