Summary

Probable field boundaries of post medieval date are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data. The alignment and character of the boundaries fits with the field pattern depicted on 19th century maps, suggesting they are of a relatively late date. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

Map

December 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Probable field boundaries of post medieval date are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S1). The alignment and character of the boundaries, which form an ‘L’ shape, fits with the field pattern depicted on 19th century maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S2). Other features visible in the surrounding area, and particularly to the north, as earthworks and/or cropmarks on both the visualised lidar data and aerial photographs (S3-S4, for example) appear to either be depicted on those same maps, or related to drainage, and are excluded from the record. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
