Full Description
2-3 July 2022. Test Pitting.
Excavation of two test pits as part of National Lottery Heritage Fund funded 'The Past is All Around Us' project (TP3 and TP6). Both were dug to a depth of 1m without natural geological deposits being reached.
Test Pit TP3 at [1] produced the following finds:
4 undatable iron nails, an iron hinge, 2 fired clay fragments and 2 oyster shells.
2 prehistoric flint flakes.
278 medieval pottery sherds and 1 roof tile fragment.
12 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds, 4 Collyweston stone roof tile fragments and 1 architectural flint flake.
16+ post-medieval pottery sherds and 8 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
Test Pit TP6 at [2] produced the following finds:
1 undatable burnt flint and 5 oyster shells
1 prehistoric flint flake.
159 medieval pottery sherds.
6 medieval/post-medieval Collyweston stone roof tile fragments.
32+ post-medieval pottery sherds.
Various late post-medieval to modern pottery sherds, iron objects and glass fragments were also recovered but not recorded in details.

4 July 2022. Stray Find.
Shortly after the completion of the test pitting a number of finds were collected from the surface of one of the allotments, including:
2 medieval pottery sherds.
2 ?medieval roof tile fragments.
2 medieval/post-medieval Collyweston stone roof tile fragments.
3 post-medieval pottery sherds and 10 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
It is also recorded that an allotment holder showed volunteers some of the medieval glazed Grimston ware pottery sherds he had collected on his plot.
