Summary

A test pit dug at this location in 2017 as part of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust's 'Imagined Land' project revealed the possible remnants of a clay-lined feature. There was evidence for Late Prehistoric activity at this location with a small assemblage of potentially later Bronze Age to Iron Age worked flints recovered, along with two relatively unabraded Iron Age pottery sherds and a number of burnt flints. Other finds recovered included a Mesolithic flint blade; medieval, medieval/post-medieval, post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds; post-medieval brick and tile fragments; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments; potentially Saxon or medieval iron smelting slag and post-medieval iron nails.

Map

April 2017. Test Pitting.
Excavation of test pit as part of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust's 'Imagined Land' project - a community archaeology project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (Test Pit 4). A natural sandy gravel deposit was encountered at a depth of 0.45m, which was overlain by a fairly thin subsoil layer. It is thought that the relatively shallow soils at this location were the result of modern landscaping during the creation of nearby housing. An ephemeral patch of thin clay and charcoal flecks in the corner of the test pit possibly represented the remnants of a badly truncated archaeological feature.
Finds recovered included:
15 undatable burnt flints.
1 Mesolithic flint microblade.
1 ?later Bronze Age/Iron Age flint scraper, 1 combination tool, 5 flakes and 14 pieces of miscellaneous debitage.
2 Early/Middle Iron Age pottery sherds.
10 ?Saxon/medieval lumps of iron smelting slag.
7 medieval pottery sherds.
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
7 post-medieval pottery sherds, 4 brick fragments, 3 roof tile fragment, 4 pieces of clay tobacco pipe and 6 iron carpentry nails.
7 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
See report (S1) for further details.
