Full Description
April-May 2017. Test Pitting and Metal-detecting.
Excavation of test pit as part of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust's 'Imagined Land' project - a community archaeology project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (Test Pit 8).
This test pit encountered a natural sand deposit at a depth of 0.82, overlain by a reasonably thick subsoil layer. Between this subsoil deposit and the topsoil was a loosely cobbled surface of large flints that had probably been part of a post-medieval yard or trackway. Finds recovered included:
21 undatable burnt flints, 52 animal bones and 4 oyster shells.
1 ?Upper Palaeolithic flint blade.
1 ?Mesolithic snapped flint bladelet.
1 prehistoric notched flake, 4 flakes and 5 pieces of miscellaneous small debitage.
1 Roman pottery sherd.
3 Late Saxon pottery sherds.
2 Late Saxon/medieval pottery sherds.
21 medieval pottery sherds.
38 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds and 2 iron nails.
26 post-medieval pottery sherds, 12 brick fragments, 2 roof tile fragments, 7 clay tobacco pipe fragments, a piece of bottle glass, slate pencil and fragment of worked bone from scale-tang knife.
29 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, 12 pieces of bottle glass and an iron horse-harness fitting
Metal-detecting of the rear lawn at the same time recovered a post-medieval decorative mount and two modern objects.
See report (S1) for further details.
